Jaundice, ties and shields: a WIC mom's experience

"Baby Amayah was born 3 weeks early with high bilirubin and oral ties making her latch shallow. At about 2 weeks I was having horrible pain breastfeeding and decided to stop my journey. I worked on drying up for one week and changed my mind. It was hard to get my supply back and to get Amayah to latch again and latch correctly. 10 days of hard work and perseverance later she is now bottle free. We have been able to stop using the SNS system and the nipple shield too. I am now exclusively breastfeeding and working on a deeper latch with Amayah. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of the WIC lactation support." ~Alicia C.

Alicia- you have been a joy to support! I appreciate your humor, willingness to try new things, Zoom with Crystal and myself, and your perseverance during the past week and a half.
You experienced so much- jaundice, nipple pain, oversupply, latch issues, ties and revisions, needing a nipple shield, stopping nursing, restarting nursing, trying an SNS system, pumping...and today, a few weeks later, you are nursing on breast with no pain and building supply up for your baby girl.
I hope you are as proud of your efforts as I am of you. Here's to an enjoyable breastfeeding journey going forward!!
