Breastfeeding and Medication

Will I be able to take medication while I’m breastfeeding?

This is an important question to ask! Always talk with your doctor to find out if a medication is safe while breastfeeding before taking any new prescription or over-the-counter medicine. Some medications, but not all, can pass through breast milk.

Prescribed Medications

Breastfeeding is highly beneficial for your baby’s health and development, and your health is important too. While breastfeeding benefits mothers, they often need to continue taking prescription medications throughout pregnancy and their breastfeeding experience.

If you're breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, make sure to tell your doctor. Ask about the risks and benefits of any medication you are prescribed. Some medications are safe for breastfeeding, while others can pass into your milk and affect your baby. Certain medications can lower your milk supply or make your baby drowsy, which may impact feedings.

If you are currently taking a medication that affects milk supply or could have adverse effects on your baby, an alternative may be suggested. Some medications have moderate risks, but your doctor may determine that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh those risks. Always discuss your options with your doctor to make the best choice for you and your baby.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Some over-the-counter (OTC) medications can pass through breast milk. Check with a pharmacist or your doctor before taking any OTC medications during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Even common medications used to treat cold and allergy symptoms can affect milk supply.
