Breastfeeding and Medication

My doctor said I couldn't take my anxiety medication and breastfeed. I am sad. Help!

Breast milk is important for your baby's development. But your physical and mental health are also important. Some medications can pass through breast milk. They can make your baby extra sleepy and less interested in feeding. Some can cause digestive problems.

Not all medications pass through breast milk. Talk with a pharmacist or your doctor about medicines that are safe with breastfeeding. Some medications don't pass through breast milk but could reduce your milk supply. Some allergy and cold medicines do this.

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking prescription or over-the-counter medications when pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you have a question about a specific medication, our Breastfeeding Specialist (RN, IBCLC) can provide information on the research that has been done on it.
