Breast Surgery

Will I be able to breastfeed even though I've had breast surgery in the past?

Breastfeeding is possible after having a surgical procedure on the breasts.

Breast Implants

You may still be able to breastfeed your baby after getting breast implants. Knowing the details of your surgery will be helpful in preparing to breastfeed. The main concern is damage done to breast tissue during surgery and implantation

Your body works hard to repair the damage to your breasts around your milk ducts. Breastfeeding is most likely to succeed if your implants are below your muscle and your nipples were kept intact. Even if you can't provide all the breast milk your baby needs, you will likely be able to provide some. Any amount of breast milk is helpful! Talk with a Certified Lactation Consultant to get support and information. They can help to make sure your baby is getting enough breast milk.

Breast Reduction

After breast reduction surgery, breastfeeding is more likely to succeed if the nipples were kept intact and not removed. Also, the more time the breasts have had to heal, the better. If you don’t know the details of your surgery, call the hospital and ask. Work with a lactation consultant ahead of time to learn what is possible for you and be prepared!
